Passionate and subdued. A slow burner. I could certainly imagine this as a film, tensely unravelling. You're not quite sure where it is going to go. Everything is very internalized, relationships are explored between people who are only very briefly together. Motivations are unreliable. A very delicate book.

i wish Otoko had a more conclusive ending, especially as a painter, and i wish the story's ending in general felt more conclusive, too. but uh that's life i guess

A re-visit to a favourite, I am quite enjoying going back to these books as audiobooks. A different chance to appreciate the books. So far my two prior ones (Thousand Cranes & Snow Country) only comfirmed what I first thought about them, this time however I found I enjoyed the book more than I originally did.
It seemed to envelop me more than the first time around and the story came by in an instant, it is a hanutningly good novel and one I am sure I will treasure time and again, like all the works by Yasunari Kawabata I have enjoyed so far.
As such I have raised my rating from 3 to 4. I can see it being a 5 when I read it again in paper format.

It has grown on me since my last reading. I do still prefer Thousand Cranes and Snow Country. Next up will be The Sound of The Mountain. Then I hope to read some of the Kawabata novels I have yet to read.
