It's readable. Very much a YA, so when the cover blurb says fans of George R.R. Martin might enjoy this I'm expecting something a bit more... gray. And/or brutal. Though more specifically, it did say fans of Game of Thrones so maybe thinking something more visual... and visual would certainly work, as I felt like I was reading a CW show.

I don't have anything against CW shows. They do, however, tend to fit a certain mold of worlds populated by pretty young adults in gorgeous clothes who angst and have Feelings about each other. Nothing wrong with that, but I do feel like I was promised "Cinderella, but with knives!" from the premise.

For someone who's supposedly the best of the best of all assassins, Celaena sure does let her guard down (a mysterious bag of candy shows up next to me on Yulemas? let's eat half the bag). And, while I get that it's for suspense that she suspects a friend of murdering the other champions, it does annoy me that she immediately suspects a woman of color (which I guess falls into true-to-life scenarios, but heyyyyyy maybe the heroine should learn to un-beckyfy herself). Said friend of color does get the last laugh with the pretending-you-don't-speak-a-language-to-eavesdrop thing but blegh, something that definitely raises my eyebrows.

OH, i just remembered my biggest pet peeve: the whole reason she's sprung out of prison and brought to court is to participate in a Champion trial... if that's the case, WHERE ARE THE TESTS??? They're often mentioned in passing, which is just... weird, given that's the main focus for trying to get her freedom. But again, CW ain't got the budget for a bunch of fancy ropes courses so let's have another book date, right?

I'll probably keep reading the series because I'm a completionist.

I only read this book in preparation for House of Shadow and Flame and I nearly couldn't finish Throne of Glass. It feels like there's a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. Characters are boring and I would not have finished this book if I didn't feel like it was important to read for HOFAS. On the bright side, this series does pick up halfway through the second book.
