This has got to be one of my favorite books of all times.

It's the story of two sisters, born in the 18th century in Ghana. One of them is captured and sold into slavery, the other married to a British officer overseeing the slave trade. Each chapter is the story of a new generation and descendant. Despite each character only getting a chapter's worth of story, they carry such profoundness, humanity and complexity, that their life becomes the thread for the next one, and they continue living throughout the book.

I loved learning about the history of the Ashanti and Fanti kingdoms, and only wish to learn more.

Prepare to cry, laugh, rejoice and scream with anger whilst going through 300 years of Ghanaian history, all through the lens of deep, complex and imperfect characters, each carrying the weight of grief, trauma and displacement.  But not only that, they carry the strengh of their blood, they strive to find beauty in the world, and they each find their way in this complicated world.

I wish the author went back 1000 years in history so there was more generations to read about, more wisdom to absorb.

This is a very relevant book to read regarding the history of racism in America. Only 7 generations separate the modern descendant from his enslaved ancestor, and each generation in between fights in their own way against a system designed to punish them for the simple crime of existing.

I pity the fool who misses out on this book !
