Nothing really innovative here. The brain science is very readable and interesting, the practical applications were just OK.

I just hated the authors use of simplistic model of the brain. Just explain it, we’re not idiots.
Good strategies, haven’t used them yet but I just couldn’t get over their simplistic explanations of things.

Basically in one sentence, don’t dismiss their emotions, acknowledge their emotions and let them understand with they’re going through first.

Summary of the 12 strategies:
(1) Connect then redirect (Empathy): connect with your children emotionally first to calm them down before you start disciplining them.
(2) Name It to tame It (Labeling Emotions): label their emotions so they can understand. Use your words to narrate a story about how they feel.
(3) Engage, don't enrage: In high stress situations engage your child, give them choices. ask them questions.
(4) Use it or lose it: Let them make a choice whenever possible, ask them questions
(5) Move it or lost it: move with your children, it will change their mood
(6) Use the remote of the mind: encourage them to tell stories, narrate and re-narrate over and over again.
(7) Remember to remember: ask questions to make them remember things and events. Let them recall events.
(8) Let the clouds of emotion Roll By: help your children say what they’re feeling and how this feeling won’t last forever.
(9) SIFT: Guide your children through their: Sensations, Images, Feelings, Thoughts
(10) Exercise mind sight
(11) Increase the family fun factor: play with them, laugh with them.
(12) Connect through conflict: Talk with your child about sharing and taking turns.

Pretty straightforward and informative on how to engage and nurture the child’s developing brain (left vs right hemisphere, top vs bottom, implicit vs explicit memory, parts work, and me-we connection). Nothing super groundbreaking but I appreciated the specific applied examples. Pretty fast ready and my be more useful as a reference with the appendix outlining each age stage and strategies.
