The simple and descriptive way Chandler writes and describes the spaces and people in them is like he's observing things play out like a detached god who loves furniture and fabrics. It's the right tone though, somehow striking a balance of dry and tense, with tired characters caught up in murders and mysteries. It's a familiar (still) kind of Los Angeles his characters live in. This book opens with an essay on the detective novel and it's biting and mean and shady and great.
