WHYYY was this 720 pages???? & so disappointing considering how much i loved the first book
this was soooo repetitive & the constant teasing of each mc’s secrets was more exhausting/annoying than intriguing. i still have many many unanswered Qs which made it so much worse to have the book end on a cliffhanger & announcement of ANOTHER book in the universe — that’s enough slices!!!!
i struggled with how explicit a lot of the scenes of self-harm & suicidal ideation were. i can see how these scenes are meant to show the ways mental illness (specifically BPD & psychosis) can cause spirals, but it still felt like too much imo. maaaaajor major trigger warnings, the one at the start of the book really does not describe how graphic it gets
i also could’ve done without alamo’s manic pixie dream boy vibe (the way he talked like a textbook? his “power”?? i’m so tired lol) & the EXTREMELY codependent relationship between him & paz. their relationship was honestly getting toxic & i fear we should not be romanticizing that!!
but i mean, whatever lol i still read this entire thick ass book bc i find the world interesting, i was invested in the side characters who i knew from previous books (more than the MCs tbh), & ultimately i did enjoy the themes of forgiveness, parenthood, the media’s misrepresentation & exploitation of tragedy, & what makes life worth living
here’s to the next book being no more than 300 pages & being the last one!!!!! this series is a PRISON!!

The author is careful about how MH is depicted. The heart of the story is each characters challenge with their mental health. true to YA form there are moments that are hard to read due to how stiff the dialogue is (in particular around the conversation of the characters trauma).

Just when I think that the Death Cast storyline has run it's course, Silvera adds another new angle, and a plot twist teasing another book. Which I will read because I want to see this series through to it's natural end. I liked seeing the threads from the other books tie together in this one and it just about justified being 700 pages long. I like that Silvera has stuck to Latina MLM characters whilst brining a new direction to the plot. I never want to reread these books, especially with the heavy suicide and self harm theme in this one, but I also never regret finishing the stories.

Love this series. This one wasn't as good as the first two and I didn't like that it ended with a cliffhanger, but it was still emotional and a great story.
It was a bit weird that everyone seemed to hate Paz for killing his dad in self-defence, I feel like most people would be understanding of his situation.
I'm hoping the death cast secret will be revealed in the next book.
