Such a fun and silly book! This would be a fun read aloud, and an easy one to talk about text-to-self connections.

This heartwarming and funny book is guaranteed to make you smile. Peter Brown excels at producing art with a retro look, but that in no way appears dated. Last year, Curious Garden was a hit for Brown and Children Make Terrible Pets, em> should be a hit for him as well.

Have you ever thought, "what if we were pets?" In this book, Lucy the Bear finds a new pet, a little boy! In this story, Lucy the Bear speaks aloud and when the little boy speaks, he only "squeaks"! When Lucy brings the little boy home, Lucy's mom tells her that "children make terrible pets" and that he is her responsibility! At first they have lots of fun, but then when the little boy starts to act, well, like a little boy, Lucy realizes having a child for a pet is a bit more work! A fun, reversal of a story!

Children Make Terrible Pets, is a light-hearted tale of role reversal that gives young readers a comical glimpse into the responsibility of pet ownership through the eyes of Lucy, an enthusiastic, pink tutu wearing bear, and her human boy pet, Squeaker. Readers follow Lucy and Squeaker on their high-spirited adventures in the forest as they play, map, and eat. However, Lucy soon realizes the truth in her mother’s warning, “children make terrible pets” after Squeaker creates some big messes and ultimately disappears back into the forest. All is well in the end for Lucy, as her affections are soon turned elsewhere, leaving the reader to chuckle and wonder if Lucy really learned her lesson.
Amusing and engaging dialogue, coupled with campy, retro cartoon-style illustrations will ensure Children Make Terrible Pets is a popular story time pick and must-have for 4 to 7 year olds.

A humorous book about a bear cub who finds a little boy in the forest and takes him home to be her pet. The illustrations are colourful and the concept is entertaining, this would be a fun read for 4-7 year olds.

What a cute book! The illustrations are adorable, and I love the simple page arrangements. There’s not a lot of text, but there doesn’t need to be. The expressive drawings more than make up for the lack of words. Lucy’s expressions when Squeaker misbehaves are sure to elicit laughs.
