If I was rating the writing and the characters I would give this book 4 stars. However, it almost feels like each chapter is a short story loosely connected by the main character of Hattie. I would have liked the book a lot more if the stories were more closely woven together. Also, I had high expectations when I started this book, so maybe that's part of it too.

This was well written, but depressing. And I really have no idea what the author's message was.

i only got through chapter 3 and then decided i hated the book. It didn't draw my attention and I was tired of reading already. Maybe I will try to read it again later on down the road.

Interesting book. Can't say as I can blame how her children turned out on Hattie, but I can see why they would feel alone. Not my usual read but was glad to have read it.

Good story of a woman living through Jim Crow and her 9 children. A lot depressing.
