Novel exploring the Great Migration by telling the story of one woman's many children.
What I loved:
Each chapter is a small vignette from the life of one of Hattie's children. They are well written and intriguing but I found myself really missing more of Hattie's voice. It became a significant drawback for me and left me wanting something else. Although the ending was a shining gem for me. Truly powerful.
What I learned:
The concept of the novel is strong and the myriad stories paint a nuanced picture of the Great Migration.

Goddamn, I loved this. Family drama. I just want to know where they are now.
Well written and enjoyable to read. Refreshing perspective(s). I do recommend it. But a little disjointed and left me feeling as though many of the characters could have been developed more.
Beautiful writing! It's not for everybody, but I loved this book. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Well written, but I want a big fan of how disjointed the stories of each child was. The link back to Hattie and August wasn't enough
Beautiful book about a mother and the lives as her kids each grow up. It feels like an epic emotional journey of how people grapple with their internal demons.
This felt very disjointed to me as I read it. Which kept me from connecting to Abby characters well.
The book was just ok. I liked reading about each of Hattie's children but I feel like the book would've been better if it focused on one or two of the children's lives more in depth. I would've liked to learn more about Cassie and Sala more. didn't like the ending.
Glad to know I'm not alone. I really wanted to love this book. I really did but....I didn't. It wasn't horrible and it had potential but it wasn't a home run for me. Each chapter reflected on Hattie's children and while their individual stories were interesting, I wish it showed more of the family unit as a whole. The times jumped around and it didn't show her the siblings truly related to each other. It was almost like a bunch of little short stories that didn't really gel together.
