I wanted to like this book, but the stories were too loosely connected for me to care very much about any of the characters. Even Hattie was hard to care about. It’s also a gritty book full of hardship and pain and terrible people, but that actually seems like the book’s strength.

This book ripped my heart right out my chest and tore it to pieces

I read some reviews where ppl stated they couldn't see how the stories connected or that it felt like it was all over the place and I can see that the story didn't have a consecutive time line and there are pieces missing that as a reader id want know but I think the point of the story/ies were to see the afflictions of the characters to see how one affects the other in very specific ways. And that is what stood out to me the suffering once it began with the death of the twins and spread through the family like a virus almost. It was painful to read but I couldn't put it down.

I really really tried, but it has been three weeks and I just can't finish. I'm not interested. This has a similar format to Homegoing, which I LOVED, but this book just can't keep me into it like Homegoing did. A couple chapters were really good, but the ones that weren't dragged. I feel bad DNF'ing a book, but I just don't think this one was for me.

Oh, man. I'm going to have to sit with this one for a bit. There is beautiful writing here, but it took me 25 days to read this book. It's not a big book. Now I remember why I don't read Oprah's Book Club recommendations.
