It kept me flipping the pages. I did prefer the male narrative to the female's, and I wished to know more of his family's life past in Iran prior to the revolution. The woman's addiction became tedious and I really found the last scenario with the cop's spiral into criminality a bit overreaching. I do finish it. That has a lot to be said because there are so many novels as of late that I can't seem to get through.
I really liked the book - it had you hooked and routing for different people all the time. The ending was such a disappointment. I was left with so many questions - I want to know what happened to everyone and the home.
I love/hate this book. The characters are mostly terrible as human beings, but the story is so beautifully told and so unapologetically unsatisfying at the end that I respect it just as much as I detest it for making me spend so much time with these horrible characters that people it.
While not what I would consider a bad read, the writing style to me seemed forced at times (particularly in romantic scenes and it felt icky rather than it’s intended romance). The ending was very surprising, but I felt like the build up still over exceeded the final moments of the book.

3 stars for the beautiful writing, but I also kinda wish I'd never picked this book up. It is a shockingly tragic story, a raw and gut-wrenching tale of the human tendency to preserve pride at any and all costs. Although I despised all the characters for different reasons, the writing somehow kept me interested in their fates.
