I had a positive bias towards this book before reading it because I thought the movie so well done. It's one of those films that you loved but hate to say you "loved" it in case people think you're morbid or weird but nevertheless it was extremely well done. The book, I'm happy to say, was also great. The character development of Behrani and Kathy in particular were so well written and the scenario was so intense that I couldn't wait to get back to this novel everytime I had to put it down. Dubus has a way of describing a scene with emotions even though he doesn't always include them but sticks to physical descriptions. In that way he reminded me of Cormac McCarthy, a lot of descriptions of actions which somehow impart character or feelings into the story. I would definitely recommend this novel; it taught me something of the life of an Iranian in the time of Shah Pahlavi and it prompted me to research that political situation a little more as I remember some of it playing out in the news of the 1970's-80's.
Do not recommend. I've never not finished a book but this one I had to skim the last chapter and wasn't even a good ending. Main character Kathy is pathetic and writing is lacking. Wasted my time.

Only got 100 or so pages into it and couldn't finish it. I simply didn't care if that women ended up living in her car forever; I couldn't stand that character. I was much more sympathetic to the other character but it wasn't enough to keep reading.
