Lived up to the "suspense" hype on the jacket. I was totally flummoxed by the actions of Lester and Kathy -- but I guess that's how I was supposed to feel. I wanted to shake them both. The Colonel I had more sympathy for, though he was super stubborn and proud. I did NOT see the tragic ending coming.
Reading this story is like watching a train crash in slow motion. The painful sense of inevitability, the inability to look away, the sense of needless waste. Excellent story telling but with very little art.

I just couldn't get into the story. I had a hard time making myself read it and after the third time of trying, I decided to be done. I had a really hard time understanding why some of the characters behaved as they did.
I had a love/hate relationship with this book. I often felt exasperated with the decisions of the characters and yet, this is the flaw of humans, right? We make dumb decisions. I appreciated the theme of judging someone before knowing their entire story. This rings loud and true for this beautifully written novel.
Every time I read this book I am reduced to tears by both the beauty of the book and the sadness contained within it.
An astounding book that I read in one weekend, not because I enjoyed it, I can't say I did, but because I had to know how it ends. It's dark, unsettling and uncomfortable. Two sides of a story are told, polar opposites, yet I'm so sympathetic with both. A completely believable story of how desperation can get out of hand. Left me feeling exhausted.
This book was lent to me by my boyfriend's mother, and it's truly beautiful but completely and utterly heartbreaking. A woman loses her family home because of a clerical error, an Iranian family who are looking to improve their life, and a policeman who falls in love - these people all come together and create a tragedy based on misunderstanding and pride. You want to crawl into the book and stop them all from hurting each other, but you just can't. The language is wonderful and the characters extremely well-drawn, but it was so sad that I eventually could only read it one chapter at a time because it was too much.
I didn't want to give this book 4 stars because it was absolutely depressing. That being said, the author made me feel things I didn't want to feel and just sucks the reader in.
