Holy Moly! Talk about a slow burn you can't set down!
When I started I was thinking "What's all the hype?" but then I caught myself not setting it down, and seeing my allegiances change as each character took the stage. These three anti-heroes will keep you up at night and make you late for appointments.

House of Sand and Fog goes deep into the complexities of the American Dream through Behrani's quest for dignity as an immigrant and Kathy's desperate attempt to preserve her family's legacy. The intense cultural conflict heightens the drama, illustrating how aspirations can turn into devastating nightmares when personal vulnerabilities clash.
This was my second time reading and it was definitely more tragic and violent than I remembered. Kathy’s fragility, Lester’s egotism, and Behrani’s rigid pride propelled them toward a chillingly realistic conclusion. The story is both profound and heart-wrenching.

I have not as of yet seen the movie and would be interested to see how it would affect my perception, but I thought this book was SO hard to read - everyone's life in this book is hard and sad and all but a few exceptions are to blame for their own misery. I will say that the actions and the thought processes all seemed very gritty and realistic, not like most books which will sugar-coat events to paint a prettier picture, but none of this made it a fun read. It's hard because you get to know both sides of the story and both hate and pity each person.

National Book Award finalist. Psychology. You get first person thought streams from three of the characters. The conclusion to the intersecting lives is surprising. The very end gives the female character closure to the early chapters of her life and possibly a feeling of belonging in her future that she hasn't known before.
Wow, wow, wow, what a great book. Fascinating in its simplicity yet complexity. Every character has so much detail that the reader is ‘in the story’. Such a sadness runs through it all yet there is hope, opportunities, love, self destruction - the whole gamut. Extraordinary
