Book 27 of the PopSugar Reading Challenge: A Book With a Time of Day in the Title
While this self-help book was incredibly cheesy and too long even at only 172 pages (I found the same ideas being repeated over and over again), Hal Elrod's proposal for a "miracle morning" is definitely intriguing to me. He talks about S.A.V.E.R.S.- silence, affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading, and scribing- and the way that implementing these activities in your morning routine can be life-changing. Is a routine like this going to make me a millionaire, give me six pack abs, and ultimately make my life 100% perfect like he somewhat claims in the book? Probably not, but I do see the value in these actions and I think I am actually going to give the miracle morning a try! I may come back and adjust my rating of this book accordingly depending on how well the miracle morning works for me :)

I’m going to give it 5 stars because i love it and the premise/message. And I love and admire the heart of the author. He’s not a great writer but I can overlook that because this book is great in so many other ways. If you can get past the (very mediocre) writing, this book is a gem and really can change your life.
Good book because of the SAVERS method. Honestly, the SAVERS method could have been sent via PDF and didn't necessarily need this whole book to get its point across. The book was good but it had a lot of "selling points" and advertisements throughout its pages.
Could have been about 1/4 as long. I kept wanting to take a Sharpie and cross out all of the following:
- sentences that could be paraphrased as "if you follow my instructions, you will have the life of your dreams"
- testimonials and anecdotes about how amazing this book is
- references to other products and books the author has written
- "Now I'm going to say something controversial" being followed by ideas that have been refuted as harmful to humans by science
- other anecdotes and authorial assertions pretending to be proof of something
Unfortunately, I was listening to it as an audio book. Plus one star because I needed the reminder that I feel better when I get up in the morning and work out.

This book opens up explaining that the life you’ve always wanted is within your grasp and the real secret may actually be waking up earlier. Elrod’s Miracle Morning and Level 10 life approaches to goal setting and completing tasks has become widely popular and motivating for a number of people. After reading this book and applying the ideas to my own life I can certainly see why. However, when it comes to a full review of this book I think its important to break it down into two parts: the ideas and the writing style.
The ideas and tips that Elrod offers are inspirational and, when you follow through with it, feels like a true transformation. They are things that seem like they should be obvious (taking time each morning for yourself) but somehow aren’t (which is where the extended title comes in). Its about taking time to focus on yourself and meet some of your basic needs, telling yourself that you can do it, and visualizing what your success will look like. There were a few suggestions that Elrod made that I disagree with based on research that I’ve read. For example, he advises putting off eating breakfast until after the SAVERS routine (roughly 1 hour after waking up) but I’ve read in several studies that its the most beneficial to your health if you eat breakfast within 1 hour of waking up. Small points like that but, as with any self-help book, ones that you can shape to fit your needs and lifestyle.
As for the style of writing, however, that’s where the 3 instead of more stars comes in. The book isn’t too terribly long but you have to wade through a lot of repeated infomercial talk to get to the point. I didn’t expect to have a one page “this is how you succeed at life” but I felt like the book could’ve lost over half of its “just keep reading and you’ll find out the secret” and it wouldn’t been just as helpful of a book.
If you’re looking to take hold of life and willing to wake up a little earlier to do that (whether you’re a morning person or a night owl, like me) then I recommend this book to you. Just be prepared to flip through a lot of pages without any real substance.

I love Hal's optimism, and I can almost feel it infecting me. But I hate mornings. I really want to give this a shot though. I will report back.
So the premise of the book isn't a bad one. Wake up earlier, do you for an hour or so, then go about your day feeling better. That's been something I've been motivating myself to do for a while now, and I thought the book might inspire me to follow through. Boy did it... not do that at all. One of the first things author Hal mentions is that he was a salesman for a living. That becomes painfully obvious as the book goes on. Every shlocky technique is thrown at you and it makes for a tedious read. I found myself skipping ahead to more concrete tips, which were nothing revolutionary. Also, the author seems to know nothing about how the body works. "You only need as much sleep as you THINK you need!" Parts like that made me feel like I was reading a satire of the whole idea of a guru.
That said, still not a bad premise. If you don't mind being relentlessly pitched something, this might be worthwhile for you. Me, I just felt like I was being condescended to the whole two hours it took me to read it.
