I listened to this in my car and realized quickly that it was abridged. This is seldom a good thing for a mystery--esp. when I'm listening! My new car has a radio that works, so I may not be trying to listen to books as much anymore. :)

This sixth book in the series felt a bit like hard work to me. There were many seemingly unconnected discoveries of bones in North Carolina, where Dr Temperance (Tempe) Brennan works as a forensic anthropologist. She spends half her time in North Carolina and the other half in Quebec, where she met Detective Andrew Ryan. Ryan and Temple are in the beginning stages of a relationship outside of work. Police find a baby's skeleton that has been burned in a wood stove, Tempe's dog finds bones which could be human or bear when they are at a bbq at a country property, and a plane crash incinerates its victims down to the bone. Tempe and Ryan were supposed to be going on holidays together but cancel their plans to help with the investigation. The book includes a lot of scientific analysis which I found too dry. The dialogue also felt very stilted to me. Overall a good story, but the plot moved slightly too slowly.

This book is so dry. It's all explanation and intricacies of being a forensic anthropologist with none of the excitement. Like hello?? The premise was a child's bones (acc. to the blurb) like how could this be so dull??
Not to mention it's being carried by the most two-dimensional characters ever which means they're carrying the story to its downfall. I kept reading in hopes it would get better but there's literally no mystery? Nothing to pursue as a reader, like the easiest dnf I've had in a while.

Enjoyable fast paced reading. The characters had believable, fun personalities that had me giggling my way through the book. Major let down in terms of narrative right at the end in my opinion - the book would be a thousand times better if the last couple of chapters were re-written.

This book was... okay... I found the story to move a bit slowly, and I feel like she made it a bit over-complicated. I had trouble remembering who was associated with what aspect of the cases and why. I was engaged enough to get to the end, but by the time I got to there and all the pieces came together about the criminal, I was like, “who was that again?” Her comic relief also felt contrived—she often had the characters explain the joke or humour of the point, which I feel defeats the purpose.
