I like to read reviews before I write mine, and someone had a good point: the writing is not great. Repetitive in places, very telling not showing in others. Likely, if I had read instead of listened to it, I would have put it down. That said, the audiobook is palatable in its structure and enjoyable enough to listen to.
I agree with others that the mystery eventually trailed into a web I’m not sure I believe, and the delivery of that jarring plot twist was, in my opinion, introduced somewhat poorly.
However, searching for clues, uncovering the past, wandering around looking for answers? While those things may not work for some people, they do for me, so I didn’t have much of an issue with the that structure the way that some readers have.
Additionally, is Hannah bland and boring? Yes, sure, absolutely. Aren’t you a little bland and boring? This isn’t to say that characters shouldn’t have flare, shouldn’t be unique or more intriguing or what have you, but every now and then, I like a character who reads a little more believably than the quirky/angry/psychotic/obsessive/highly unreasonable character many tend to appreciate exclusively.
Finally, the saving grace of this novel is the complicated and budding relationship between stepmother and stepdaughter. In the audiobook, this translates well, in my opinion, and the ending almost made me cry because of it.
