About the impact of humans on the climate crisis, and various technological adaptations that are being tried/researched in order to mitigate the on-coming disaster.

This is the second book I've read by Kolbert, and while I enjoyed this more than the first one, some of my criticisms remain the same. My biggest issue with her is how disconnected some of these events seem—I don't know that she successfully (for me) connects these events into an overarching theme about the ecosystem and our effect on it, simply by living and sometimes by direct action.

On the other hand, I appreciate how she tries to find truly competing views on the subject of human impact on the environment—and how technology can and has been used for good in many cases. These kinds of books have a tendency toward the pessimistic, favoring the approach that people should just leave nature alone and it will get back to normal. She interrogates her biases when it comes to taking this hands-off approach over human intervention in a way that I found really compelling. Human impact is not, as it turns out, all bad—I don't know if I believe it, but it is nice to think about.
