After the last book was a bit of let down for me I was a little nervous starting this one. But I can say it was better than the last one. While not as good as some books in the series it is by far not bad.

We have lot going on for our characters in this book. The Government is on their butts and changes are happening in her old units and none of them are good. They also trying to find a way for her Uncle to pass on all the while trying to catch a ghost that kills and rapes women once a year on Halloween.

While there was a lot going on story wise this book seemed a lot slower them some others, it also seemed a bit darker or maybe that was just me.

There are some things going on with her mom that I’m not sure about. Sometimes it just seems the author is just dragging her mom along in the story and doesn’t really know what to do with her.

I really like that we get more and more of Fabian, I really like him and he became just part of the family.

I loved that Cat once again finally embraced her uniqueness with her powers and made use of them.

Bones was also pretty nice in this book and I like that they became such a power couple. I just love them and they snarkly loving relationship and they would do anything to protect the other. Plus all the smexy times doesn’t hurt. Though the whole sex while flying in this book was a bit too much and bit over the top.

We again see a lot of people from the past again, and I still like Tate, wish he could have been like that from the very beginning. We also get to see some of the powers Denise has.

I was not a huge fan of Spade in this book, I think it was bit much , while I understand his need to protect her I think it was all a bit much, but he came down a bit.

Overall and other great book in the series and I curious to see the conclusion of Cat’s and Bone’s journey in the next book.

I rate it 4 ★

Some of my favorite quotes:

“Your mum pounced on her and started sucking away. Would’ve been arousing if not for all the screaming.”

“Ian,” Bones drew out warningly.

He grinned. “You’re right. I was aroused anyway.”

***

“That face. That body. And you know he’s packing. Look at the angle on that dangle.”

***

“Brilliant landing.. We´re trying to keep a low profile, and here you´ve gone and made it look like a meteorite hit.”

***

“You’re shagging a woman who can turn into a dragon? Blast you, Charles, I am sick with envy!”

Sixth in the Night Huntress urban-fantasy series revolving around Cat Crawfield Russell and her husband, Bones. Both are vampires. Both will take on the world to preserve it.

My Take
Oh, this just had me going!! I can't stand Madigan and I can't wait to see how Cat and Bones will take this jerk down! He's such a smarmy cuss. The "adventures" Cat and her crew have with Kramer are almost a splash in the pond what with Madigan popping up to screw things up. If he's an example of Homeland Security leadership….we is all in big trouble!

Complicating matters is the handover of authority after Don's death in This Side of the Grave. While Tate is way more than competent, we can never forget that this unit is part of Homeland Security. A government department. Naturally, the government needs to muck things up and send an officious asshole in to send everything into a downward spiral. And there's something Don is not telling Cat about Jason Madigan. Bad blood. Bad ju-ju...who knows, 'cause Don sure ain't gonna give it up. And Madigan sure has a deep-seated need to know everything about Cat even as he insults her right, left, and center.

The Story
Fabian desperately wants Cat and Bones to help Elisabeth, a ghost with whom he's in love and who has a terrible self-set task: killing the ghost of the man who tortured, raped, and burned her alive hundreds of years ago. And not just for her. She wants Heinrich Kramer's ghost to die to prevent his continuing to torture, rape and burn women alive every year at Halloween.

The Characters
Everybody gets involved in this one! Cat and Bones, Spade and Denise, and Ian all work together to put this serial killer down with all the cracks and snarking we've come to expect.

Justina is Cat's mother...and to her everlasting shame, Bones' mother-in-law and, it seems, she has some issues with being a vampire. Don Williams is Cat's uncle and the former head of the supernatural division for Homeland Security and he can't seem to cross over and so spends his efforts on spying on the new government asshole, Jason Madigan, who thinks he can run the division while Tate has a much less prominent role.

Tyler is a medium recommended by some friends of Spade's whom they hope can help and Dexter is his ghost-sensing dog. Seems Helsing, Cat's cat, can also give a bit of warning...

Fabian is a ghost and friend of Cat and Bones who has a thing for Elisabeth, another ghost. Heinrich Kramer, the Inquisitor, is a very little man with some major issues and...urgh...really bad breath. Being a ghost doesn't seem to have slowed him down much.

The Cover and Title
OK, yeah, this is a very Cat cover with her standing in a graveled plane, bare branches, and the moon shining behind her as her coat swirls in the wind. Good thing she's a vampire with the belly-baring shirt she's got on!

The title makes me think of a number of issues in this installment from Don not being able to pass on, settling Kramer's hash, and dealing with Madigan, each just One Grave at a Time.

Cat and Bones relationship is a sexy unbreakable bond. The forces of ghosts try to break them, torture and kill. Love and belief in each other always works for them. Too bad they aren't the only ones involved, snoopy government jerks, crazy dead folks and screaming women interfere . Not as intense as previous books in the series for me. A nice easy continuation of the series.

Kramer is such a good (extremely evil) villain! I love how Frost based him on an actual man.
One thing that I really liked about this book was that the villain wasn’t our normal villain... he’s a ghost and is only solid 1 day a year, so Cat can’t run in with her knives and guns blazing!
I wish there would be been more Cat and Bones time though. Their relationship was definitely put on the back burner here. I also really missed Vlad!! And Mencheres. But mostly Vlad.

I loved this book. There were some laugh out loud moments via the character Ian who is not in the book near enough. And obviously Bones, as always, makes me swoon. Cat kicks ass, surprise surprise. I can't say I'm a fan of how powerful she is as a new vampire, but whatever. It's not like there isn't a good excuse. Can't have the mc kicking ass as a pre-vamp, then weak post-vamp. I get it. Wouldn't be right! :-) And as per Jeaniene's usual, she found some new and interesting way to change up the steamy scene. A little over the top, but I give her props for originality.

Jeaniene Frost never disappoints. Loved this new Cat and Bones adventure. A lot of action as always. There is a new guy in town and he has it in for Cat. Cat is tracking a ghost with so much evil in him that he is still able to kill. He targets women and Cat is in a race to find his 3 new targets. Can she and Bones find them in time and save them? Some old favorites so up in this new book. It was such a good read, that I read it in one day. Looking forward to her next book.

3.5 stars? It's just because I miss Mencheres and Vlad. Why is the gang incomplete??? Plus, Cat and Bones sexy times are getting lesser and lesser.
