I see why this is a classic. Really nice look back in time and captures the innocence of childhood well—along with the changes that come with growing up.

this book reminded me why classics are classics. Even though I’ve never been to Brooklyn and I am not growing up poor, I still related to Francie, and I suspect many other people do too. She’s one of the best main characters in any book I’ve ever read. 100% recommend

I had bought and started this book back when I was in school, but I had only got to appreciating it after the second time of me picking it up. When I had started the book back in DC, I felt that it lacked plot and didn’t really find myself getting into it. However, now reading it at home with a clear mind, I saw the beauty in the complex world Betty Smith creates through her writing. The book was a sort of fictional memoir, following a young child’s life through Brooklyn and overall, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. The complexities of the characters and storylines within the novel are beautifully written.
