Didn’t enjoy the read as much as I’d hoped. This was my second reading and the first was years ago before I became a Christian. I didn’t remember all the references to the Catholic faith- as I’m sure it meant nothing to me. I think overall it took away from my enjoyment. The ending of the book seemed to shift the storytelling so as to procure a happy ending and losing the grit of real life that drove my love for 3/4ths of the book.

I read this book as one of the Rory Gilmore Reading List Books and I loved it.
This heartbreaking book followed the Nolan's, a family living in New York just trying to get by with what little they have. Narrated by the daughter Francie, who has dreams of becoming a writer. The struggles this family goes through all while the father drinks, the mother has to stay stern and strong, and the kids have to grow up much sooner than they should have to.

Definitely a good read and I will have to read again.

"Dear God, let me be something every minute of every hour of my life. Let me be gay; let me be sad. Let me be cold; let me be warm. Let me be hungry...have too much to eat. Let me be ragged or well-dressed. Let me be sincere- be deceitful. Let me be truthful; let me be a liar. Let me be honorable and let me sin. Only let me be something every blessed minute. And when I sleep, let me dream all the time so that not one little piece of living is ever lost."

very touching. does feel like children’s literature, although stretching what children’s literature can depict. a lovely argument for itself.
