This was a gem of a novel. I honestly think it is my favorite book of all time. The author is gifted with her prose. She is so adept at creating very believable and likable characters and a world for them. 

She uses such descriptive language that I felt like I was with Francie in each of the scenes experiencing everything right alongside her: exchanging junk metal for pennies with her brother, the death of her father, her first job, her first kiss, her fears and dreams. 

It is quite slow-paced, but I actually enjoyed that. It was different from contemporary novels and was a breath of fresh air. It was truly a very wholesome read. And it inspired me to write more.

Wonderful historical fiction! I especially enjoyed the parts of the book that expressed Francie's love for reading.
