This is a classic coming of age story of a young girl growing up in the 1910s in Brooklyn, New York. It explores hardship and resilience as the family navigates poverty, you witness these incredible family members display great strength of character and pride, we see our characters navigating loss, we witness complex family dynamics and different ways family members love one another. And most of all, we watch little Francie dream about what the future could hold for her, and we see her work hard and persevere to see her dreams come true.

I bought this book from Barnes and Noble, from a table that had books featuring and set in New York. We stayed in Brooklyn during our visit, so it just felt right to pick this book up and prolong my experience of the Brooklyn charm.

This is a slow meandering read as we follow along the everyday happenings of this family. But it’s so touching and heartfelt, it’s explores all sides of human nature, and while it doesn’t shy away from the dark parts, there’s still a warm light cast across this entire book from start to finish. I loved it.

This is a wonderful book with so many great quotes and life lessons. It is written so well and still translates to today’s world somehow. 4.5 stars because it was a bit over descriptive for me but a lovely read overall!

4.5-5, I really enjoyed this book. It’s very hard for a book to make me emotional and this got me watery eyed for sure. The dynamic between the mother and daughter was something I think a lot of eldest daughters experience! I love how real it is, no happy ending, poverty to it’s core, alcoholism, etc.
