I love reading a coming-of-age story. I especially love reading a coming-of-age story under the blistering sun in the sweltering heat. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is quiet and unassuming in its beauty, and I think that that makes it a perfect summer read!!!

On paper, this book ticks all the boxes: it’s emotional, it’s an exploration of humanity , it grapples with growing up and life and death, and it’s less so about what happens and more about who it happens to. After reading it, I feel like this book fulfilled all my expectations, but with a caveat: IT WAS SO HARD TO GET INTO. It might just be because it’s been awhile since I’ve read something so very character-driven, but that’s also kind of what I love and I don’t usually have an issue with it. This book in particular though had me still trying to find my groove 150 pages in. Eventually, of course, I came to love and care for Francie, but there was a lot of build up to get to the point where I felt fully invested.

That’s okay, though, because once I was invested, I flew through this book. I love love love books that deal with what it means to live and love, and this book is exactly that. The different relationships that Francie has with different family members touched my heart; I loved how honest this book was. Though this was obviously written many decades ago, its overarching themes are still so very relevant today, and I think there’s a lot of beauty in that. I love love LOVE Francie!!

At the end of 2013, this book will be on my Top 13 books of this year. The characters, the prose, the setting all was just perfect. i fell in love with the protagonist Francie because she reminded me so much of me it was a bit scary. This is a beautifully written story that I promise you will not want to put down once you started.

This is a classic coming of age story of a young girl growing up in the 1910s in Brooklyn, New York. It explores hardship and resilience as the family navigates poverty, you witness these incredible family members display great strength of character and pride, we see our characters navigating loss, we witness complex family dynamics and different ways family members love one another. And most of all, we watch little Francie dream about what the future could hold for her, and we see her work hard and persevere to see her dreams come true.

I bought this book from Barnes and Noble, from a table that had books featuring and set in New York. We stayed in Brooklyn during our visit, so it just felt right to pick this book up and prolong my experience of the Brooklyn charm.

This is a slow meandering read as we follow along the everyday happenings of this family. But it’s so touching and heartfelt, it’s explores all sides of human nature, and while it doesn’t shy away from the dark parts, there’s still a warm light cast across this entire book from start to finish. I loved it.
