In a nutshell: The story of a young girl growing up in the slums of New York

Recommendation: ALWAYS RECOMMEND. Read this book and hold it close to your heart forever.

I fell in love with this book so effortlessly….one of my new favourites. Francie is definitely one of my new favourite book characters.

Francie Nolan and her family live in the slums of Williamsburg. Where she grows up, there is a tree that grows out of the cracks of the foundations against all odds, even if it has to grow at strange angles. The tree is obviously a symbol of Francie’s growth from a girl into a young woman. Luckily she grows alongside her brother Neely, who is one year younger than her. Francie loves her father, who, despite his good intentions, is a hopeless dreamer and a drunk. Unfortunately, Francie and Neely’s father passes away while Katie, their mother, is pregnant with their third sibling. This is a story of hardship, heartbreak, and love.

“There’s a tree that grows in Brooklyn. Some people call it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seed falls, it makes a tree which struggles to reach the sky. It grows in boarded-up lots and out of neglected rubbish heaps. It grows up out of cellar gratings. It is the only tree that grows out of cement. It grows lushly … survives without sun, water, and seemingly without earth. It would be considered beautiful except that there are too many of it.”

So this is one classic that I think should be on everyone’s reading list. I felt so connected to the Nolans that when the book ended I was very sad. It felt as if I had grown up with Francie and knew her as a real person. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye!

I felt for Johnny and his struggles to be a good husband and father. I felt for Katie and her struggles to keep the family together and to keep the house. I felt for Neely and the obvious pain he was sheltering.

I can’t really explain my love for this book enough, but you should read it.

I loved everyone in this book. I loved how well we got to know Francie as she got to know herself. I loooooooved the drawn out character development. This was such a beautiful slice of life adventure.
I loved how much we were rooting for everyone and how well we knew their vices.
