Jim seems to have forgotten that when you’re playing with tropes, you’re supposed to add twists to make it interesting and fresh. There were brief times when the book was funny, but the accidental sexism and, failure to maintain the pace and tension during action scenes made it a difficult read.

Sexist as fuck.
And he's attacking science in there.
"The end of the twentieth century and the dawn of the new millennium had seen something of a renaissance in the public awareness of the paranormal. Psychics, haunts, vampires–you name it. People still didn’t take them seriously, but all the things Science had promised us in filmstrips and black and white movies seen in grade school and junior high hadn’t come to pass. Disease was still a problem. Starvation was still a problem. Violence and crime and war were still problems. In spite of the advance of technology, things just hadn’t changed the way everyone had hoped and thought they would. Science, the largest religion of the twentieth century, had become somewhat tarnished by images of exploding space shuttles, crack babies, and a generation of overweight, complacent Americans who had allowed the television to raise their children."
I understand that this is a fantasy book but, dude, do you really want to go there? Like you don't know how much we owe to science. Do you really want to go and attack it like that? Fucking outrageous. Anyway, Tim Minchin's already expressed all that I feel in relation to this issue (infinitely better than I'll ever be able to) in this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0W7Jbc_Vhw
