Great book, excited to read more. The writing is a little bland at times but it's great when the characters voice shines through. Just a lovely modern (well, early 2000s) spin on noir detective and magic

interesting and engaging, Butcher really commands the world he builds and the magic system makes sense and feels accessable as a reader. the solution to the crime was predictable and I spent the whole book waiting for the protagonist to catch up, but that's not really a fault of the book. I still can quite figure out if Harry was written to be a misogynistic asshole as a character flaw or if Harry's view of women was a product of the time it was written. curious to see how the series develops.

normally i quite enjoy grizzled sarcastic messy bitch detectives like harry dresden, but good LORD is this man constantly in need of a cold shower, it feels like for at least half the book every time a female character is in the scene he's using like,, the horniest descriptors he can use in a non-erotica novel, i nearly tapped out during his visit to that vampire woman's house because this guy is just TOO down bad. thankfully that stuff kinda slows down near the halfway point- at least it seemed like it did, maybe i was just getting used to it- and it wasn't as annoying to finish as i was afraid it would be. i'll check out the second book because i'm juuuuust interested enough in the setting to see where this could go, but GOD do i hope dresden starts being less of a horndog because i don't know if i can handle looking through his Womanizer Goggles for another book lmfao

This is going to sound harsh, so I want to be clear: I enjoyed reading this.

It read like the author was trying to insert himself into a fantasy life. Which is fine, it’s just a bit silly. He’s always complaining about not getting girls, yet there somehow happen to always be girls around him who are willing to go on dates? Suspicious. How many times can you call on brains vs brawn, claiming your experience is what sets you apart as a professional, making you the clear winner? Endlessly apparently. Would half the story be solved with like 3 conversations? Quite possibly. Should Dresden just find a therapist already? Definitely.

Overall, it was very funny. I enjoyed it very very much.

Storm Front is the first of a series about a wizard named Harry Dresden. In this book, Dresden must face off against a newbie wizard who understands little about his true potential, but knows enough to cause a lot of ruckus for Dresden. In an attempt to help a young damsel in distress, Harry puts himself into the fire, literally, to save the day, and stop the bad guy.

Found the POV of the main character annoying.  Disliked a lot of past references but as it was the first book in the series, no explanation behind it.
