Great book, excited to read more. The writing is a little bland at times but it's great when the characters voice shines through. Just a lovely modern (well, early 2000s) spin on noir detective and magic

This was more entertaining than it had the right be. Honestly was thinking 3 stars, but have to admit compared to other books I’ve read recently it kept me reading past when I’d normally stop. Guess the best description I have is a guilty pleasure.

Given the length of the series, this book seems structured as a tv pilot to introduce the world and status quo that I expect to be shaken later. I will say, some of the magic descriptions I found tedious when he seemed to described the science of it, I’d rather things just be given rules of what can and can’t happen, don’t ask me to think critically about fantastical things, I’d prefer to accept they happen and think about the story instead.

It was very plotty, but the characters are infuriatingly static. Aggressively unchanging, not nearly as charming as the author wants them to be.

It’s first of like twenty books, I certainly won’t be reaching for no2 right away but maybe if I get a slump or find it in a Little Library I’d keep it in reserves.

Some people find the first few books sexist, but I see it as the main character being an “old fashioned” noir detective. It is presented as a flaw and characters do call him out (some being strong women). I will admit it could have been done better (particularly how women are written in the first books). If this doesn’t sound like something you’re cool with, take the author’s advice and skip to the fourth book.
