Given the length of the series, this book seems structured as a tv pilot to introduce the world and status quo that I expect to be shaken later. I will say, some of the magic descriptions I found tedious when he seemed to described the science of it, I’d rather things just be given rules of what can and can’t happen, don’t ask me to think critically about fantastical things, I’d prefer to accept they happen and think about the story instead.
Graphic: Death, Drug abuse, and Fire/Fire injury
Moderate: Addiction, Gun violence, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Alcohol, Cursing, Toxic relationship, Death, and Blood
The main character can be seen to fit in the mold of noir hard-boiled detective, and comes equipment with the causal sexism that character type often entails.bookcaptivated's review

I never had any desire to read this until my dearest cousin informed me that James Marsters narrated the audiobook. Then she had the audacity to ask me if I knew who James Marsters was and I almost crawled through the phone and strangled her. Because, yes, I do know who James Marsters is. He is my god. He Spike. He is William the Bloody. He is Randy Giles. He is a bazillion other characters who are incredible but will never overrule the power he holds over me when he bleaches his hair and talks in a British accent.
So I listened to this god of a man read this book and I loved it. I'm not sure if the story was good or if Marsters' voice acting is just that magical, but it doesn't matter, because I'm going to continue with this series forevermore regardles.
Oh, it's about this wizard named Harry Dresden who runs, like, a PI business in Chicago and gets dragged into a bunch of supernatural chaos, like magical murders and missing magical husbands. All while being voiced by James Marsters.
Moderate: Death of parent, Blood, Death, Drug abuse, Drug use, Gaslighting, Murder, Violence, and Gun violence
