fantasynovel's review
5.0
just finished this book for the second time (i can't believe it's been 4 years since i read it for the first time!) and i'm still so in love. ik there are other ppl leaving reviews saying she shouldn't have written this story, that it wasn't hers to write, but i think those reviews are missing the point. it's not that this isn't her story. it's a story about it not being her story. abt her feeling of being left behind, the feeling that deepened into an obsession that led to this book. and that feeling isn't her fault, and i applaud her for writing a book that centers such an "icky" feeling. the prose is so good (yes, someone could call it purple. but what the fuck ever). and the world it invites you into is fascinating. i remember reading this book on the m79 that winter four years ago feeling like i was traveling into the pages of the book. it's a moody, temperamental, bewildered book, but so are teenage girls. and this is a book abt teenage girlhood. and i love it.
