I live in Hastings which I knew was a historical smuggling town, but had no idea of the intricate, terrifying hold the smuggling gangs had over so much of Kent and Sussex. This book doesn't hold back in recounting a tale of seafaring and gang violence, gender fluidity and family.

I really wanted to enjoy this but it wasn’t for me. I loved the vivid atmosphere the author created, but this came at the cost of plot and character development.

I found it hard to connect with Goody and there didn’t seem to be a real closeness that the reader could have with her as a character. I found the plot interesting and what carried me to finish the novel more so than seeing the end to Goody’s story.
