I get why this is hyped. And it’s well written. But just not for me.

I liked this book, but I didn't think it was as good as Gothikana. The plot was intriguing, and I liked Salem a lot. There was less of a gothic otherworldly feel than I was expecting. It was still mysterious, it just didn't have the mood I was looking for. There was a lot less sex scenes than Gothikana. I was definitely wanting more spice

This is the ultimate dark academia romance! Full of themes of death, secrets, and loss all tied into an undeniable attraction between two flawed characters. And THE SECRETS will drive you crazy in the best way. I was lucky enough to receive an ALC through Netgalley from Macmillan Audio. Aiden Snow and Jaclyn Kelso were flawless in their performances. If you're interested in this story I highly suggest listening to it. They took a gripping story and made it irresistible.

This story was definitely more character based rather than plot, even though the plot was always lingering in the background it was often back burnered, which I didn’t necessarily mind. I think Salem and Caz were pretty layered and detailed as characters, but side characters like Aditi, Melissa, and Baron were very two dimensional. We only really got the barest details of their lives and I correlated that to Salem’s struggles with learning how to be friends with someone, but even in the epilogue their life updates were very vague. The culmination of the action was concluded very quickly too, and we have no idea what happened to any of them (presumably they kicked the bucket) but it still feels a little too open for me considering this is a standalone. The atmosphere was dark and moody like every Runyx book and I loved it! Even the narrators really manipulated their voices to give off that gravelly aloof tone Caz and Salem’s characters gave off.

Honestly, the plot dragged so much, and I felt like there wasn't enough dialogue between the characters to make any of the romantic interactions between them make any sense. I found myself getting very bored with this book. I wanted to enjoy it, as I heard good things, but it wasn't for me.
