I didn't find this title to be particularly engaging and the resolution was disappointing. Unlikely to recommend.

Where the Body Was is an interesting experiment from Brubaker—more of a slice-of-life story with a murder in the background than a traditional crime thriller. The characters feel grounded and real, and the art team nails the moody, nostalgic vibe. But the pacing is slow, and the central mystery never quite lands with the impact I was hoping for. It’s more about atmosphere and memory than suspense, which works in places but left me a little cold by the end. Not bad, just not as gripping as his best work.

It's no Criminal, but it was still a solid crime/mystery tale with fantastic page-turning storytelling.

This book is an anthology of stories about people in one town all connected by a death. The characters all had their own own point-of-view chapters, which included showing how their lives overlapped. That worked really well. The organization of the book kept it from feeling chaotic with so many characters, or perhaps just the right amount of chaotic.
The retrospective elements of the story were really interesting and helped add clarity to some of the characters' motivations and decisions.
I suggest reading the rear matter. It mentions that inspiration for this story came from true crime podcasts. I agree that reading this book felt quite a bit like listening to one.

This team always get me hyped for a book. Love criminal, but everything they do is either great, amazing, or atleast good.
I think sadly where the body was falls into the last for me.
It's really just a slice of life of this small little town with some pieces of shit people, but also multilayered people since no one is just "good" or "bad". I think the idea of this book is good but the characters, all of them, fall a little flat in the end. I didn't get attached to a single one which kind of surprise me. I did enjoy the overall plot but it also felt a bit aimless. This book wasn't as strong as their previous work. The art though, as always, remained pretty strong throughout.
A 3 out of 5. Thanks Netgalley for the advance review!
