It was fine. The art wasn't my favorite, but I've already looked at vol 2, and it does improve. I don't much care for the inserts from the author about writing it - took me a while to understand it. To be fair, I've not really read any manga before, so I'm not sure how common such a thing is.
It generally felt unpolished mainly because the author points out their own mistakes like how one character is said to be older in the course of events, but then it changes or in the second volume that two characters would have graduated, but they're just going to ignore that because. It's just odd. I'm not sure what to think about that.
I am reading this because I enjoyed the anime, and overall, I think it is better told in anime than manga. It's easier to get a grasp of the tone and humor visually and audibly than through reading. Then again, I'm not accustomed to this format (reading backwards took a minute to get used to).
Overall I'll continue with it. At least until the point the anime left off as I'm curious and these don't take long to read (and are free through my library.)

I think I might just be too old or too much time has passed since this manga was published. I picked this up because a book I read last month was based on this manga/anime, so I thought this might shed some light on that, because it was over the top and kinda hard to follow. Well, it's a spot on homage, because I found this way over the top and very hard to follow.
The anime was a little more intelligible for me, so I may proceed with that, very cautiously. Otherwise, hats off and a big salute to all who love this manga; I wish I did, too!
