I was really excited coming into this because I watched the entire anime before and already loved the characters. This is a great series that follows a group of “attractive young gentlemen who have nothing better to do” than to have a host club to entertain the “attractive young women” of the school who also have nothing better to do. It’s super over the top and silly but also addresses gender fluidity (in the most casual way) which is great! Definitely worth the read and I can’t wait to pick up the next novel.

I was originally going to give this 4 stars but due to some formatting decisions by the author for the manga, it was really hard to properly follow the dialogue at times and also some of the mini drawings/text were hard to read/interpret. I did appreciate that the author acknowledged this and I’m hoping some changes might be made in the coming volumes.
funny lighthearted fast-paced

Trying to read this because I have a group of girls who are read this genre. Struggling with the right to left reading and differentiating between characters. I'm going to keep plugging along...that was difficult. I don't see the appeal but I may try another just to try to understand what my students see in them.

Haruhi is a new scholarship student at the elite and exclusive Ouran High school!

Everything is off to a great start — until Haruhi breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to the so called “Host Club”. They are a mysterious campus group composed of six attractive, super-wealthy—and, if you ask Haruhi, annoying—guys.

Now in their debt, Haruhi must work as a host in the club to pay them back. Essentially, entertaining the female students on campus during lavish campus events.

Only one thing — Haruhi is a girl!

(The boy’s uniform is less expensive.)

As Haruhi and the guys begin to interact, though, will they realize that they’re more alike than they initially seem?

I love tho one!

This is such a fun manga! I remember watching the anime ages ago and I’m so excited to actually get into the story again!

I really appreciate everything about this story from its initial plot to its cast of unique and sweet characters to all of the humor throughout! Haruhi is such a uniquely autonomous and authentic shoujo protagonist who really goes against the grain when it comes to female protagonists in shoujo.

This one will have you both wiping your eyes at its sweetness and sincerity and laughing out loud!

Definitely can’t wait to read more~

Ouran High School Host Club is a comedy of errors much like Shakespeare’s twelfth Night.
Haruhi is a young girl on scholarship at a prestigious High School. She is searching for a quiet
place to study when she stumbles upon “The Host Club”. The Host Club is a collection of 6
wealthy attractive boys who spend their time courting wealthy female classmates. Courtship is
a game that each club member tries to win. Because of her short hair and lack of stylish clothing
the leader of the Club Tamaki Suoh believes that Haruhi is a boy and that he’s seeking the
services of the Host Club. These services largely consist of flirting with potential “clients” and
hosting outrageous parties. Tamaki immediately offers Haruhi his choice of gentleman escorts.
Haruhi is shocked by this offer and accidently breaks an $80,000 vase. Haruhi becomes a servant
of the Host Club to pay off her debt. She also becomes a pet project for Tamaki who is
intensely interested in her working class background. Haruhi introduces the boys in the club to
the joys of instant coffee and ramen as she tries to inject a little reality into their myopic world.
Haruhi becomes a sought after gentleman escort which annoys Tamaki. Things change when
Tamaki finds Haruhi’s wallet. Once the Host Club learns that Haruhi is a girl, they quickly
conspire to keep the secret from other female clients. They force Haruhi to play different roles
in their various parties. The story is told in 3 different installments that follow the natural
course of a school year

If Geo hadn't picked this book in my May TBR, then I probably wouldn't have read it anytime soon. It's not because I didn't want to read it, but because there are other books that I'm far more interested in, as during the summer of 2018 I watched the anime for the first time so the story is still fresh in my mind. I loved the anime enough to buy the whole series for a massive bargain of £30, but I knew that I wasn't going to get to it soon (nonetheless I did for my May TBR!). I did enjoy this volume, but because I had watched the anime I knew everything that was going to happen.

One scene did surprise me with Kaoru and Hikaru licking Haruhi, and eating the biscuit out of her mouth because she's in a chefs outfit and spent time baking. I was surprised at that scene being in the volume because it seemed very graphic... but I suppose it's present in this book because it's not meant to be a sexual thing.

I loved seeing the characters that I loved, and getting to know the author and seeing the bonus chapters of this volume, as well as the statistics Bisco Hatori provided on what the manga readers rated the characters. I love all these extra bits to this manga.

I liked this volume, but I don't think I will continue on with the series anytime soon. I will mostly continue once I have forgotten the plot of the anime so I can enjoy the mangas more.
