This book is hard to rate. The violence feels gratuitous due to excessive detail (I will be having nightmares) and I'm not sure how genuine the philosophical musings at the end were- they felt a bit out of place. However, Murakami does a good job of engaging with American romanticisations of Japan. The tension is also very well realised and builds effectively to THAT scene.
