I almost did not finish, it was very confusing and slow and the part written at "you" were very hard to read at first but for some reason I stuck with it and that was worth it. Check trigger warnings first!

Was this book exceptional? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Not really. I wish I would have waited to read it in a less…contentious part of our timeline, because the themes and content weighed heavily on me. Please check trigger warnings. And if you find dystopian ideas falling a little too close too real life disconcerting, maybe hold off on this one.
Personally, I loved the use of second person POV. Those were my favorite and most painful chapters to read; there was a visceral immediacy to them. Just Brilliant.

Objectively speaking, this is a good book. The writing is solid, the world-building is rich and complex, and the story is unique and surprising. Personally speaking, though, it was a chore getting to the last page.
For me, the main pitfall of this book is the main character, who seems to lack both personality and emotion. I couldn’t see her as anything more than a cardboard standee observing the world around her. A flat protagonist makes for a flat experience. Without a strong lead, the plot becomes thin, too; this is primarily a story about wandering, with a few interesting moments sprinkled in. I’m still not sure I understand what point it was trying to make.
I can appreciate this book for what it is and the skill that went into crafting it. It just didn’t ring my bell. Shrug.

I don’t know what to say about this. It was fine. The writing isn’t bad, I wasn’t confused, it just did not capture me. I almost think it would have been more interesting to read in chronological order. The last 15% has me intrigued to read the next one (and I was gifted the whole trilogy so why not) we shall see…

Book of doom and despair. I regret picking up this book only because I feel empty now that I’ve finished it and I have to wait to read the rest of the series. Absolute masterpiece of complex characters and relationships and worlds. The plot is so captivating and deep that I had to sit and think after each chapter.
