What in the Avril Lavigne did I just read mister Cave?

5 stars because this was weird, heartfelt and unhinged as fuck lol

Bunny Munro is one of the most delusional, ignorant, nearsighted, selfish and single-minded personae ever conceived. His one-trick-mind has only one goal: sex. A goal he pursuits in more and more desperate ways, blurred by alcohol and a completely distorted self-image. Obsessed with women’s vaginas Bunny’s whole world consists of opportunities to fuck only. One surely hopes this ridiculously shallow character has few counterparts in the real world. As we watch the world through Bunny’s eyes, we have a first-row seat inside his hollow world, while he stumbles on his path to self-destruction, which only last a couple of days. As Bunny Munro is anything but sympathetic, this would have been rather boring, but Cave, devilishly, has given this incompetent, irresponsible creature a son. The boy adores his father, but he doesn’t get the attention and care he needs at all. In fact, the boy is in any sense superior to his dad, something he realizes himself on the way. It’s this interplay between father and son that elevates the narrative, and gives the book its poignant drama. Although it remains unclear why Bunny Munro’s composition crumbles so fast, it does lead to a beautiful and even moving finale. Notice the many tiny rabbit references throughout the book.

Wonderfully written ... even if overly sexually explicit ... dark novel.

8/10
