I think I'm a little bit overdoing it on coke-fueled mania books like this. It was good but it grated after a while, but was done beforr it could truly overstay its welcome. Does the bit of insane evil man with a crack in the perfect unplanned charisma well.
I couldn’t finish this book. It was absolute drivel, like reading the thoughts of a 15year old, sex obsessed boy. There were multiple themes of pedophilia and just really unbelievable situations where he was still relating everything back to sex. It also felt as though Cave was trying to cram as many big words into one sentence as possible, and at times felt like he had just picked up a thesaurus and found the word he liked best, even if it didn’t really make sense. Would not recommend.
Bunny Munro, travelling priapic salesman of women's beauty products, just can't help himself sampling the customers. His constant infidelity pushes his wife to suicide and yet he still seeks solace between alien bedsheets. Only there does seem to be some guilt tugging at the fringes of his conscience, for she seems to be haunting his performances. And other than an underwritten relationship with his introverted nine year son, (this ain't no "The Road") that is the whole book. There is no motion, ironic seeing as it's a road trip, throughout the book. Bunny has minimal self-insight, the son isn't going to lend it such is his unconditional devotion, so there is very little development for the reader to glean. There seems to be no logic between when Bunny is overcome by phantoms and concomitant madness affecting his swordsmanship and when he is able to shake it off and revivify his flailing spirits. Some of the scenarios the former ignites drift off into unsatisfying denouements. It's all a bit of a mess, with only glimpses of Cave's verbal virtuosity. Deeply, deeply disappointing.

Bunny is not a character I liked, and even with Nick Cave narrating the book, I couldn't get very far.
I like the writing. I really like the lessons I got. But it took me most of the book to get them. I really didn’t like the characters, but I think that’s intentional. So much so that I was considering giving up. Even the kid is pretty unlikable, but that’s entirely Bunny’s fault, the dad. The book definitely has more redeeming qualities than Bunny.
One of the strangest novels I've ever read, but also one of the most entertaining

masterful dialog and images. not more than two pages go by without mention/description of vaginas ( often that of Kylie Minogue or Avril Lavigne) or repugnant sex with damaged housewives. booze, smokes, desperation and a son's blind love for his bastard father. heart warming.
