Love this book so far. Heart breaking tale about a refugee from the Sudan.

Wow. What a book. It not only taught me so many things regarding the struggle in Sudan. It opened my eyes to the plight of people who move to this country and strive to make a life here. The story is of a boy and later man, who lives in Sudan and eventually becomes one of the Lost Boys. You follow his struggle in Sudan and out. The only difficult part of the book was the jumping back between telling his past story and telling his present story. Just when I got into what he was saying, the story would switch gears. Then, I realized that that is what made it even more intriguing to me. The story is a "fiction" b/c they had to list it that way since not every conversation, plot line, etc, would be remembered by him since he was so young at times.

Love, love, loved this book. The story is compelling and full of wit and humor, despite the heavy subject. It helped me to understand a bit more of the situation in Sudan and Eastern Africa in general, while also being a beautifully constructed narrative.

This probably would have been four stars if it hadn't been SO long. Eggers - you went a bit too deep with this one...

Heartbreaking story, wonderful writing.

An absolute must read.

This book is beautiful. I wouldn't call it an all time favorite, but I gave it five stars because it changed the way I looked at my life, looked at others. It changed the way I considered the world and I think that is a 5 star quality.

Another amazing book by Dave Eggers!

Interesting, fascinating, depressing, and ultimately... boring?

A must read. I had a hard time getting started because it is so sad and I read it over Christmas. BUT, it is an incredible story - an incredible history - of Valentino Deng and the people in his life and country. It is well written and uses some interesting tools to keep the reader engaged, present and aware that this is really someone's life (even though its designated as fiction). Once I got started, I could not put it down.
