Rarely do I exhale with relief at the end of an audiobook. This one took the cake. Eggers took an excellent premise and a fascinating story and turned it into a horribly boring, drawn-out (in a Dickensian way), hair-pulling yawn of a novel that I completed only because I felt guilty for not liking it. Others spoke highly of the novel; I kept waiting for the redeeming chapter, and it never came. How can a story of a refugee, struggling through war-torn exile and then the reality of immigrant life in the US, possibly be boring? Ask Dave Eggers. Just don’t waste your time reading this book.

WOW! This book is amazing. Everyone needs to read this book to get a better understanding of the war in Sudan and the difficulties The Lost Boys have faced since being relocated to the United States. Wow, wow, wow

This book gives snapshots of the life of a Sudanese refugee. There is a bit about what it is like to have come to the United States and what the country looks like through the eyes of a Sudanese refugee. He was one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. The books touches on what happened to his village and how he walked to Ethiopia and what he encountered along the way. In addition, how he came to be a resident of a refugee camp in Kenya (Kakuma) for a decade. What is life in a refugee camp like and how does one contact relatives and get news about them?

Who do you trust without your family? How do you stay out of war when it is all around you? How can a child of war recover from the trauma and create a healthy life for him or herself? What sorts of support systems work? Which are necessary?

This book certainly reminded me of the charmed life I have led.

All this having been said, I found the chapters to be long and a bit disjointed. The book just didn't take a hold of me and whisk me through the story....it was more of an arduous journey like that of Achak/Valentino/Domenic.

This book is often slow but the story is incredibly important. The narrative style is very powerful and challenges you to consider your own biases, prejudices, and responsibility to listen to the story of other’s struggles.
