Als het niet soms wat houterig geschreven was had ik het een betere rating gegeven. Wellicht is het een probleem van de Nederlandse versie en verdient de Engelse versie een betere score

I thought this book was alright. I enjoyed the parts of it that recounted the experience in the Sudan, but the found the part that took place in the US very disconnected.
An epic hero journey that is as surprising at it is moving. For those of us in America who hear of "The Lost Boys" and think of Peter Pan, this was a wakeup call to the complexity of life beyond--and within--our own borders.

What an incredible story! I did find the writing to be long winded-it took me much longer than usual to finish this book but the story itself is truly incredible. It sparked a curiosity in me to learn more about Sudanese history. A true representation of resilient human nature.

This is the first fictional autobiography that I have read and also my first experience of Dave Eggers' writing. It tells the life story of Sudanese Lost Boy Achak Deng, also known as Valentino. I enjoyed Eggers' writing style as he described Valentino's journey from a happy childhood in the Sudanese village Marial Bai, to refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya and to the U.S.A. (although not in that order). It was heartbreaking to read about the civil war in Sudan and how it continues to impact upon the Sudanese people.
Compelling, brilliant and a wonderful insight into the plight of Sudan.
