This was just okay. It started off really strong, the beginning was very creepy and intriguing but the further the story went, the more bored I got. I didn't cared for any of the charcters, except for maybe Goyo, and I definitely I didn't give a single fuck about Dean's and Bethan's drama from the past, it felt super unnecessary for the whole story. The plot was a bit repetitive and I feel like this could've been a novella or a short story and it would've been more effective.

A team of illegal prospectors scouting for rare earth minerals in the melting permafrost up North discovered a cave with strange wall paintings and… no, that would be telling… anyway, something is thawing and it‘s not something nice. Caves, ice, barren landscapes with geysers, methane explosions and polar bears, interpersonal drama, guns and tension, the end of the world looming and something out to get you. Creepy, yucky, fast, entertaining. Sporror! With some commentary on climate change.

The mysterious island is somewhere near Baffin Island.

The plot was pretty predictable, all the way to the eye-rolling ending. Good fun though. I could have done without the „Long-Gone“ though, they were a bit far out there and not necessary to carry the plot. Anyway, for what it was, it delivered.

This could be a fun movie. 🦠🦠🦠🦠

I was trying SO hard to get through this book but it’s actually so distracting how badly written this  is and how flat all the characters are.
Honestly they could have cut the original foursome down to 2 to at least TRY to flush out some characters, but Mr Tim didn’t do that because
1. He needs bodies for the body count and
2. He doesn’t know how to make any character have any depth.
This was a LONG shot for me finishing it. Good concept, with bad execution. I’d rather wait for the SyFy movie version.

Fungal horror fans stay thriving, I guess, but I can't point to any particular reason why I didn't like this one. It had everything I could have wanted, down to the James Rollins-esque cataclysm and a dubious ending.

I think maybe I was just not in the mood for the push and pull this book provides. It ping-pongs between the characters where the action is happening and the characters who are on their way, and while usually that would create some fun tension, here it just frustrated me. It was a strip tease with hours between glimpses of what I came here to see.

I even pulled a maneuver I rarely employ, a last-ditch before giving up on a book entirely: I skipped a bunch of chapters to see if something coming up catches my interest. Usually, I'll have no idea what's going on since it's chapters ahead, and if it interests me enough I'll want to go back and read the skipped pieces to backfill what I missed.
That did not work here. I skipped 3 chapters and landed in the exact same place. Nothing had changed. So I can only assume that the characters set down their weapons and silently had tea for a few hours before picking back up.

I should have just given up on it, but I pushed through. I can't say it was worth it, but I will say it got much more exciting once the action caught up with itself. This would be great for someone willing to roll with the anticipation. Today that wasn't me.
