Having been written in 1940, you might expect this to be outdated. Apart from some terms that are used (and the attitudes of some characters), it instead feels almost contemporary.
The female characters are written wonderfully. They are so much more than weak chattels or "romantic interests", instead being the complex, important characters they deserve to be.
The pages are peppered with the most wonderful and creative descriptive phrases, but sparingly enough to constantly surprise. I really love the author's style.
The plot is complicated enough it made my head tangled trying to keep track of the threads at times, but it all comes together, and is certainly not boring.

I will reread this book at some point, because I feel like due to life circumstances I had a harder time focusing, but I couldn’t make sense of the plot. Of course the language was crisp and on point. Chandler’s a real master of the turn of phrase.
I enjoyed this book, not quite as much as THE BIG SLEEP - probably because of the movie with Bogart and Bacall. But this was an interesting, even more convoluted story. You can't imagine how it will all tie together and I about decided that it wasn't going to. I was really surprised how Moose Molloy tied in with the jewel theft ring, the psychic, the doctor and the society dame. Not to mention the former bar owner's wife.

Thoroughly enjoyable - Chandler is just great at telling a murder mystery story with a whole host of characters from the very good to the very bad, with some laugh out loud commentary, in a complex web of relationships and an ending that you can just barely begin to figure out before you're there. Delightful!
