A rare 5 stars, but this is by far my favourite James Herbert book, it will make you think, it will disturb you, but it will definitely be a good reason to put your time into.

Enjoyed this one mostly. One of my favoruite parts was the backstory of Janusz, the Polish bodyguard. Another highlight was hearing Halloran's backstory from Mather.

I only listened to this book because I had really enjoyed The Secret Of Crickley Hall. This is the most violent, confusing, book I have ever read. There were too many people, too much fighting to compensate for the magic I was hoping for. Ghost stories I can cope with but this was just violence with no definable story. I listened to the end to try to understand but I don't. I hope I never read another book like this again ever.

One of the best of Herbert's that I've read so far.

A meaty story with ancient gods, a 'virginal' love interest and the Provisional IRA.

The name, cover and blurb of the book made me think I was dealing with a king of modern gothic horror. It turned out to be more along the lines of a wannabe Indiana Jones action story. The latter isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when everything about a book leads you to expect one thing, and it turns out to be a wholly different kind of story, it's a bit jarring. I got over my surprise though, and for a while I was getting into the book. It never bowled me over (the main character is a bit of a stock action guy, all bursting with machismo and coloured by his Dark Past, the Obvious Bad Guy is obvious. The woman is every action story heroine common to 80s, 90s and early 2000s films...), but I was enjoying it. The book was too long to sustain that level of interest though. By page 150 I was getting impatient, by 250 I was praying that we'd get to some sort of point one day, and by the end any good will I had towards any of the characters had long since drained away, so the big climax where they're all in danger just left me feeling apathetic.

Good horror and descriptions, but first half was tedious. Henchman backstories were interesting and added to the plot.
