I almost abandoned this book because the first couple of chapters were so slow, but I’m glad I stuck it out; once the plot got going it was a page-turner. The characters were frustratingly mediocre but always vivid. The twists weren’t surprising, but the prospect of discovering how things were going to end was enough to keep me engaged. I found the ending immensely satisfying, even though a central mystery was left unanswered. If you enjoy political thrillers and spy films, this is a very fun read.

This was one of those books where despite not liking either protagonist that much, the story itself kept me engaged and needing to know what was going to happen! Velvet might also have been my first noir book I’ve read and it has opened me up to trying more of this genre in the future.

Fun read with a fascinating historical backdrop! Perhaps my favorite part was that the heroes of this story are rather unexpected, and grow over the course of the book. Maite is actually the reason I would say this book is kind of inspiring. She is a women exiting her youth, who has sat on the side line of her own life. She seems caged by her own insecurities, fear, and disappointment. But through this adventure she learns to take charge of her life, think beyond herself, and take the risks she has always wanted to take. This book is a fun mystery to read in and of itself, but I would also recommend it to anyone who is looking for a little inspiration in the face of a life that feels stagnant or disappointing, a reminder that you have permission change things.
