This book was interesting and provided good historical context of the Pullman strike and life in Oakland, CA around the 1890s.

I love a multi-generational story, and although this book could stand alone, it is technically part of a series following the same two families whose lives have been long intertwined.

Ibrahim is very talented at telling a story that isn’t sensationalized. Although maybe not as exciting to read, it makes the book feel very realistic.

Third book in a series. Definitely read Yellow Crocus and Mustard Seed first.

This would be more of a 3.5 stars book for me. This book is centered around Sadie & Jordan and women’s suffrage. It was not as riveting for me as the first two books were, but it’s still a moving story about strong women. Can’t wait to see what happens in the fourth book!

*the 4 months it took me to read this was not the book’s fault

Golden Poppies
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
This series is written by Laila Ibrahim and follows Lisbeth, a white girl living in Virginia, and Mattie, her wet nurse who had to leave her enslaved newborn son to care for Lisbeth. As expected, it was difficult and heartbreaking to read how the slaves were treated (in Yellow Crocus). I was surprised that once slavery was abolished, many slaves remained with their "Massa's" because they didn't know they had a choice or had no money or resources to escape. This is not something that should surprise me, but nonetheless, it did.

Lisbeth and Mattie's bond continue throughout the series into Golden Poppies where Lisbeth is summoned to Mattie's bedside in her last days. The book goes on to follow Mattie and Lisbeth's children and grandchildren and focuses a lot on women's suffrage.

I highly recommend this series.
