I had to read this for my class, and I'm really grateful that I did. Elie Wiesel weaves a haunting memoir about his Holocaust experiences. It isn't a happy story-but it's a necessary one. Wiesel writes almost lyrically at times, packing this novel with a deeply poignant soul, and one that may not be pleasant to read, but these things rarely are. And in the end, it really shows how important the core human values we've grown accustomed to are

“As a human document, Night is almost unbearably painful, and certainly beyond criticism” -A. Alvarez

That quote is one of the blurbs on the back of my copy and is a great summary of my thoughts.

This book was already heartbreaking and emotionally gut-wrenching in the preface. The rest of the book continued the pattern. The matter of fact, highly imagistic, and brutal emotional realism is a great witness to one of the world’s most horrific tragedies.

In terms of syntax and diction, the book is a simple read. Paired with its relative shortness and gut-wrenching content - this may be the book I would consider to be the most necessary Holocaust-related read. By that I mean, if a person intended only to ever read one book in the entire Holocaust literature, so far this has my vote.

Wiesel's memoir is descriptive and haunting, showing the way the Holocaust caused humans to become less than so, and the degradation into a primal beast on both sides.

This book is highly recommended, and it is a solemn reminder that we shall never forget.

"And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere."
