Was curious to learn more about Elizabeth Taylor and this book was recommended. Found the story of Elizabeth & Richard's marriage, their films and their lives fascinating. Now I have a long list of movies to rent!
I think I overestimated my enthusiasm for the subject matter, and the author underestimates the reader's ability to recall previously mentioned facts; it gets repetitive at times. But if you have a burning desire to know all the lavish, sordid, tragic details of these two's lives, this is for sure the book for you.
I read this curious about this great love story I had heard about for years when it can to Elizabeth Taylor's life. At first it kept me really interested, then became just droning and fairly boring to me. I actually started it weeks ago and put it down for a few weeks before trying to finish the second 200+ pages. Not a book I'd recommend or even consider reading about her again. I had to put it down at the 20 page epilogue.

no matter how many times i read this book, it will always bring me near to tears
I anticipated that this book would be a big, gossipy dish -- and it kind of is. But more surprising was it's level of research (although I listened to the audiobook...so couldn't look at any notes). Kashner also takes characters you thought you knew and shows surprising facets to their personalities. I left the book liking Elizabeth Tayolor and Richard Burton but sorry that some of their excesses could never be checked. There's also great behind-the-scenes stories of many movies from the 1950s 1960s and 1970s.
Tight editing would have greatly helped this book - it rambles, people are introduced multiple times, and the chronology can get muddled. However I didn't know much about Burton and Taylor and I found it to be very interesting. All in all a good but not great read.
