1 star bc characters were overall shallow, there was very little conflict or consequence, and the plot and relationships were far fetched and unbelievable.
+ half star because the set up was dramatic and interesting.
+ half star because after reflection I now see how complicated Caroline actually is—she is not fundamentally a “church lady,” she was only using religion as a coping mechanism for her self-consciousness and insecurity. Religion was only a shell to protect her from judgement and ridicule. This is why she was so easily persuaded by Sara to take home a book. And how her relationship formed so quickly.

La librería de los finales felices no ha sido lo que me esperaba. Es una historia que tiene poco ritmo, demasiados personajes como para encariñarse con alguno, una protagonistas insulsa y autocompasiva, un romance sin chispa y un exceso de texto vacío. Lo único bueno que le he encontrado son algunas reflexiones sobre libros. ¿Lo recomiendo? No, pero he leído cosas mucho peores.

I liked this book at the beginning but then it just plateaued. Maybe because it was translated from Swedish. It got very repetitive, there was no real tension between Sara and Tom, and very few of the characters had enough personality to be interesting. I also just couldn’t get over how Sara just starts a bookstore with no legal consequences, and then immigration just lets her off for a fake marriage. Sara herself wasn’t particularly endearing either. Maybe it’s better in Swedish.
